About Penrith

Set in the Eden Valley, Penrith is a gateway to Lake District National Park. The picturesque market town is filled with sandstone buildings, cobbled squares and cosy British pubs. You can explore ancient castles, visit historic gardens and explore the beautiful Cumbrian countryside.

Penrith is near Lake District National Park, which cradles some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes. It's laced with hundreds of scenic walking trails showcasing hilltop forts, verdant valleys, lush woodlands, ancient stone bridges and shimmering lakes.

It's hard to miss the enormous Penrith Castle, which has been watching over the city since the 14th century. It's set in a grassy meadow and played a key role in defending the Eden Valley against Scotland. Stroll around the castle walls, wander around the rose gardens or enjoy a picnic.

The Penrith Museum offers a glimpse at the town's ancient roots. It's housed in an old school house and is filled with everything from Roman pottery to period antiques. For the best views in town, climb up Beacon Hill. It's crowned by the Penrith Beacon monument and commands panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside.

Enclosed by 17th-century walls, the Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill is a beautiful place to spend the day. It's owned by the British National Trust and is known for its flower-filled gardens, leafy orchards and working watermill that’s been producing flour for centuries.

Getting around Penrith

The Penrith town centre is easy to get around on foot. Rental cars are a fast and flexible way to explore the Eden Valley and Lake District National Park. The town is serviced by its own train station, with fast connections to London and Glasgow.
