About Fort Bragg

With deep roots in the military history of America, Fort Bragg has recreated its image as a tourist destination for whale watching, deep-sea fishing, sea-glass infused beaches and outdoor recreation in towering redwood forests. It’s also a short drive from Pinot wine tasting in Mendocino County.

Things to do in Fort Bragg

Seasonal whale-watching vessels and fishing charters depart from Noyo Harbor, while kayak and canoe rentals are available for exploring the Noyo River. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as black-tailed deer and otters along the river routes. At Mackerricher State Park on the Pacific coast, you can spot up to 90 species of birds while strolling the boardwalk or traversing wetlands, dunes and bluffs.

Find rainbow-coloured sea glass on Glass Beach inside the state park, along with unearthed treasures, such as pottery and thousands of discarded items now polished by Mother Nature. You can also visit the Sea Glass Museum to see brilliantly hued glass and “found art” creations, including handmade jewellery.

Old-growth redwoods once served as logs for local homes, and you can tour the Guest House Museum to see the first electric-wired residence on the Pacific coast. What was once the Company Store for lumber workers now houses art galleries, trendy boutiques, artisan cheese shops and wine tastings from Mendocino vineyards and wineries.

Kids love riding the Skunk Train, which runs through redwood forests or to the Pudding Creek Estuary. For a fun day trip, drive about 1.5 hours to Confusion Hill, home of the world’s tallest freestanding redwood chainsaw carving and the Redwood Shoe House.

Getting around Fort Bragg

You can rent a car either in town or at Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport, about 180 kilometres away. Local buses, cabs and rideshares offer transportation as well.
